MODERN DAY HOUDINI TO VISIT PRESTATYN ON 18TH AUGUST!

MODERN DAY HOUDINI TO VISIT PRESTATYN ON 18TH AUGUST!

Prestatyn will host a world first event as part of its Field Day Festival on Friday 18th August. Daredevil and escapologist Dave Diamond will be debuting his thrilling Water Torture Cell escape for the enjoyment and fascination of visitors.

The Water Torture cell, called the ‘Upside Down’ by Houdini was first performed in 1911 by Harry Houdini as part of a one act play called Houdini Upside Down! And subsequently became one his most famous acts, performing it until his death in 1926 (subsequent to popular belief this stunt did not kill him)

When the act was first performed, the promoters insisted that the tank was covered so as not to ‘cause faintings and panics’ amongst the spectators. This is not the case in Prestatyn! Dave Diamond will be completing his challenge in full view of the crowd!

So what makes a person want to risk his life for the entertainment of others? “I used to compete in extreme marathons, lasting for days at a time, but over time I wasn’t getting the same adrenaline rush as I used to and I decided I needed a new challenge’ says Dave from his home in Woolwich. “I had always had a fascination with  feats of endurance and decided that this would be my next adventure”

Dave contacted world renowned escapologist and consultant Russel Erwood who lives in Conwy and will be assisting with the feat in Prestatyn, and they teamed up to train for the challenge of Dave’s life. Training has been taking place for the last 18 months and the 18th August will see the culmination of this work in the acts debut.

“This is also a new challenge for me” says Russel. “I have performed or consulted on all of Houdini’s escapes during my career. Apart from this one. When Dave contacted me I jumped at the chance to be involved. How could I possibly say no?!” “Training has been challenging but Dave is so determined. Nothing fazes him. I am incredibly excited to be involved.”

Dave is gearing up for the event with daily endurance training and meditation exercises to help his mental strength and stress levels when under water. When asked how he will prepare in the minutes before the stunt takes place, he replied “I am taking a leaf out of Andrew Basso’s book (Basso has renewed interest in the act by performing with the Illusionists) and saying a silent prayer to Houdini”

If you want to be a part of this historical event come to Prestatyn on 18th August and watch the spectacle!
